Biography

Angus Hamish Forsyth has practised as a solicitor in Hong Kong since 1971. In 1976 together with three other solicitors he founded the now well-known firm of Stevenson, Wong & Co. which he retired from as senior partner after 40 years with the firm in 2016. He became a consultant with the firm for another four years and since the year 2017 has practised as a sole practitioner under his own name of “Angus Forsyth & Co.”. He practises in a wide range of commercial, personal data privacy, internet, trust, charitable and cultural fields of law.

Professional Experience:

(i) As solicitor to the High Court of England and Wales in 1970;

(ii) As solicitor to the High Court of Hong Kong in 1971; and as Notary Public of Hong Kong in 1978

He is a Former Council Member and Vice President of the Hong Kong Society of Notaries and of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal Panel. He was a member of the Competition Law Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong, a long time member of the Legal Committee of The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Council member of the Hong Kong Internet Professionals Association, Hong Kong & Mainland Software Industry Cooperation Association, Member of the Companies Registry and Hong Kong Government Advisory Group on the rewrite of Hong Kong Company Law.

He served as Longtime Trustee and Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Trust.

Angus Forsyth has acted over many years in the setting up and subsequent legal needs of a wide range of charitable institutions of a public character recognized as such by the Inland Revenue Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government.

Among the leading recognized clients in the performing arts field are the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society Limited, the Hong Kong Festival Fringe Limited, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Limited.

He is Chairman of Musica Viva Limited, the second opera production company in Hong Kong.

He has also been actively involved in the corporate establishment and legally based activities of The Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, The Friends of the Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Limited, The Friends of the University of Hong Kong Museum and Art Gallery and with the establishment and legal good governance of the Pasteur Foundation Asia as the Hong Kong fund raising charitable vehicle for Institut Pasteur in Paris and in relation to the joint cooperative activity between the Institut Pasteur, Paris and the University of Hong Kong.

He has also acted for 25 years for the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, a non-governmental organization which operates through 35 service units and 20 social enterprises all over Hong Kong caring for all remedial and curative aspects of psychiatric rehabilitation of 12,000 people every year as a not for profit company limited by guarantee with charitable status. He has also acted for many years for Changing Young Lives (successor to Save the Children Hong Kong) and Conservation E3 Foundation Limited.

These organizations are involved in a wide range of activities frequently requiring accurate and succinct contract drafting all of which Angus Forsyth has been involved with.

Additionally, he has practiced in fields of general commercial legal work in joint ventures, single corporate vehicles, mergers and acquisitions but also extending to all aspects of trade mark registration and copyright protection in Hong Kong and in China and in oppositions to intellectual property infringers, all aspects of the Personal Data Privacy Ordinance and related controls and observance and the impact upon the Hong Kong society generally of the Electronic Transactions Ordinance and the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Ordinance all of which continue to apply to many private and public activities here.

A wide range of commercial matters of public outreach ranging from focus on the law of advertising and its controls in Hong Kong, trade description legislation for control and regulation of sale of goods and services in Hong Kong; to the regulatory law relating to securities, insurance, establishment and operation of charitable institutions of a public character and related trusts.

He has additionally acted in the establishment of trusts both in Hong Kong and in overseas territories and has a wide experience of trust law in these connections and he has an active interest in the development of the law and practice relating to the insurance industry and to charities and trusts and contribution based upon many years of experience in this field.

He has written articles and publications extensively on various different topics covered under Commercial Law, Trademark Law, legally compliant advertising, Intellectual Property Law, Personal Data Privacy Protection under the law generally and on the impact of the Internet and social media and their legal effect on the community of Hong Kong and on the Electronic Transactions Ordinance.
