The AS Foundation is a UK social mobility charity, which focuses on removing financial barriers for undergraduates and graduates looking to enter the legal profession. It was launched in 2019 with the support of 18 founder members, of which Stephenson Harwood is one. Thus far, the AS Foundation has provided circa £20,000 of laptops, business clothing, online subscriptions and scholarships. The Advisory Board will provide strategic advice, guidance, and assistance to the trustees to help them achieve the charity’s objectives.
“The route into the legal profession can be expensive, not just because of university and law school fees, but also other costs and expenses along the way. For many people – no matter how strong their determination and dedication – a career in law can be made incredibly difficult by each of these,” said Thornton de Mauroy. “By focussing on a range of financial obstacles, the AS Foundation is able to make a direct and tangible difference in helping to realise the ambitions of smart and energised aspiring solicitors. It’s an absolute pleasure to have been invited to join the Advisory Board of the AS Foundation and I look forward to supporting an initiative I feel very passionately about.”
Thornton de Mauroy specialises in international arbitration and High Court litigation, and acts for corporates, banks and high net worth individuals across a broad range of sectors. He has been committed throughout his career to improving social mobility and access to law, and to working with organisations – such as the Aspiring Solicitors Foundation – which share this passion.
