In two decades of experience, Annisa Aaliyya Chua has had roles in intellectual property (IP) practice and law firm management. A pure trademark and designs attorney early in the first half of her career where she trained with some of the best, her second half saw her building and managing a niche premier firm in Kuala Lumpur while maintaining her IP practice. Her work covers the full spectrum of domestic and international trademark portfolio management from clearance searches and opinions, advising filing strategies, filing, and prosecuting applications, oppositions and cancellation actions, licensing and acquisition to anti-counterfeiting strategies and enforcement.
Her culturally diverse background, interdisciplinary qualifications, and extensive international experience and network facilitate diplomatic communications and nuanced understanding of the requirements of clients. Rather than business development, she prefers client relations development. She enjoys the creative process of brand building, seeking to understand the big picture and underlying reasons for things and threads of meaning. Forward thinking and strategic, she is interested in testing hypothesis in legal discourse while balancing clients’ practical needs and securing their rights within the parameters of the law.
Ranked in 2019 as a Leader in Trademarks by World Intellectual Property Review, Annisa advocates for and has published on the role of brands in environmental sustainability. She served for 2 terms until 2021 on the Designs Sub-Committee for Malaysia in the Asian Patent Attorneys Association
We think that if you are going to start a business there is little point in doing what those before you have already done. The market is already flooded with IP Firms so we wanted to make sure we were different, that we set ourselves apart from the norm.
We believe we have achieved this: we are continually pushing the boundaries for those clients that want more than the traditional service they have received from other Firms. We offer a complete service, not just reacting to instructions but assisting our clients to make those decisions, a far more proactive rather than reactive approach. We also think our clients don’t want to be given the options, without any advice on which option to adopt.
We don’t therefore sit on the fence, and always put ourselves in the clients’ shoes. Yes, it means a few more grey hairs on our part, but we feel our clients’ appreciate this approach. However, it’s all very easy to say and throw a few clichés around but what counts is putting it into practice. We feel our success as a Firm is testament to this but please feel free to get in touch if you would like to experience first-hand.
