Matt Emsley to lead Herbert Smith Freehills in China
Matt succeeds May Tai, who was recently appointed as the firm’s Managing Partner, Asia.
Based in Hong Kong and fluent in Mandarin, Matt advises on China equity capital markets and corporate matters for Chinese and international clients. He is also a member of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong‘s Listing committee.
“Matt will be an excellent leader of our China business through its next phase of growth,” said May. “He is a top name in China capital markets, speaks Chinese beautifully, and is universally respected and liked by clients and colleagues alike.”
Matt will continue to work closely with Tom Chau and Nanda Lau as heads of office in Beijing and Shanghai respectively, and with the China practice heads – Alexander Aitken in Finance and Simon Chapman in Disputes.
“Our China business has grown exponentially over the last decade, with last year’s addition of local law capability through our joint operation with Kewei a real step change in our capabilities,” said Matt.
“We have great teams in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai supporting China domestic, inbound and outbound work for major Chinese and international clients. Our goal now is to double down on this investment in talent and local law to take our practice to new heights.”
