Ms. Christine Kang, partner of JunHe, was appointed a member of HKIAC’s Proceedings Committee

On June 19, 2020 the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (“HKIAC”) announced the appointment of new members to its Proceedings Committee following the expiry of previous members’ terms. Ms. Christine KANG, partner of JunHe, was appointed a member of HKIAC’s Proceedings Committee.

The Proceedings Committee makes key decisions on procedural matters in HKIAC cases pursuant to HKIAC’s rules under the authorisation of HKIAC’s Council, including whether arbitrations shall proceed on a prima facie basis, challenges to arbitrators, expedited proceedings, consolidation of arbitrations and joinder of additional parties. The Proceedings Committee comprises members of 10 nationalities based in six different jurisdictions, and Ms. Kang is the only member on the Proceedings Committee appointed as a legal expert practicing in Mainland China.

Ms. Kang has significant experience in resolving cross-border disputes. Before joining JunHe, Christine practiced at various international law firms and worked at CIETAC for eight years prior to her private practice. She has advised many Fortune 500 companies on their international arbitration cases with major international arbitration institutions, including but not limited to CIETAC, AAA-ICDR, ICC HKIAC, SCC and SIAC, involving various areas. She regularly represents multinationals in different levels of Chinese courts and has also advised Chinese SOEs on their overseas litigation cases, in concert with US and UK litigators.

Ms. Kang has extensive experience in anti-bribery investigations and corporate compliance matters. She currently represents Chinese SOEs in their settlement negotiations with Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), including the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the Asia Development Bank, in MDB sanction matters including investigation cooperation’s and compliance programs.

Ms. Kang is an arbitrator with many major international arbitration institutions, including CIETAC, AAA-ICDR, HKIAC, ICC and WIPO. She has also been appointed as a member of AAA’s International Advisory Committee and of AAA-ICDR’s Rules Revision Committee. Ms. Kang was recently nominated in Who’s Who Legal: Thought Leaders-Global Elite 2020, Arbitration 2020 and GIR 2020.
